STREETISM IN ACCRA The problem of streetism is complex and the situation has been with us over the years. Streetism basically means living on the street as a result of lack of housing accommodation coupled with the difficulty to cater for themselves. The negligence of some parents to take good care of their children is gradually breeding more street children in Accra. The problem of street children can also be attributed to poverty, wrong perception of city life, peer pressure, just to mention a few. Day in day out there are children on the streets who engage in one form of work or the other. Some are seen selling ice water, commonly known as pure water, while others as head porters. These children are exposed to various forms of abuse. Their safety is compromised because there is on one to rise to their defense in times of difficulty. I shall discuss these abuses in my following articles Over the years successive governments and other agencies have done their bit to curtail this menace. However, this has not yield the desired result. This is evident in the number of children on the street and the challenges they go through. This situation is very worrying and calls for a redoubling of efforts to fight this menace. The government, as well as Non-Governmental Agencies should step up efforts to fight this menace.
